Manual Overview

The Drake ML-2 Marker Luxury Transceiver service manual provides detailed guidance for troubleshooting, diagnostics, and adjustments. The transceiver operates on 144-148 MHz with a 10-watt RF output and supports 12 channels. Troubleshooting involves checking connections and ensuring the antenna is properly tuned using a Drake WV-4 Wattmeter for minimal reverse power. Error diagnostics can be performed by verifying frequency stability and spurious radiation levels, which should be greater than -80 dB below the carrier. Calibration includes adjusting frequency deviation, factory-set to 5 kHz but adjustable up to 15 kHz, and ensuring the receiver’s sensitivity is within specified limits. Board-level guidance involves checking the transistorized circuits and the 6360 output tube for any faults. The manual also covers power requirements, emphasizing the correct use of AC and DC power sources, and provides instructions for adjusting internal controls such as deviation, frequency, and S-meter sensitivity. Proper installation and maintenance of the antenna and power connections are crucial for optimal performance.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Diagnose power-up failures with AC/DC power source checks.
  • Adjust transmitter frequency deviation to 15 kHz max.
  • Use schematics for circuit tracing and troubleshooting.

Overview

The DRAKE ML-2 Marker Luxury Transceiver is a VHF FM transceiver known for its quality and operates within the 144-148 MHz frequency range. It is capable of handling 12 channels, with 3 channels supplied. The transceiver is completely transistorized with a 6360 PA tube and has a power output greater than 10 watts. It can operate on both AC (120 Volts, 50-60 Hz) and DC (13.5 Volts) power sources. The receiver is a crystal-controlled double conversion superheterodyne with high sensitivity and low spurious sensitivity. The transmitter offers adjustable frequency deviation and high frequency stability. Controls & Indicators

The front-panel controls of the Marker Luxury Transceiver include an ON-OFF switch, which is a toggle switch located at the left bottom of the front panel, turning the transceiver on when the switch lever is in the up position. Additionally, there is a VOLUME control, referred to as the AUDIO GAIN control, which is the inner knob of the concentric controls at the left top of the front panel.

Installation / Setup

Carefully remove the Marker Luxury Transceiver from its carton and check for shipping damage. Notify the carrier if any damage is found. Fill out and mail the registration card for warranty purposes. Save the packing material for future use. Ensure all accessories are accounted for before storing the packing material.

The transceiver’s location is not critical, but ensure there is space around it for air circulation. Avoid placing it near heat sources and do not cover it with items that may cause overheating.

The transceiver requires an antenna resonant on the operating frequency with a 50-ohm impedance. Adjust the supplied antenna to the operating frequency using the provided tools and chart. Use a Drake WV-4 Wattmeter for accurate adjustment by minimizing reverse power reading.

Do not use vertical antennas without ground planes, as this can cause RF feedback and hum on the transmitted signal.

The transceiver is wired for 120 volts 50-60 Hz and 13.5 volts DC. For 120 volts, use the power connector with the line cord. For 13.5 volts DC, use the connector with red (positive) and black (negative) wires. The positive lead fuse is 6 amperes, and the 120-volt fuse is 2 amperes.

The transceiver has a built-in speaker. An external 8-ohm headphone or speaker can be used by plugging it into the rear phone jack, which disables the built-in speaker.

A 500-ohm dynamic microphone with a push-to-talk switch is supplied. A carbon microphone can also be used, with connection details in the schematic.
