The SPKR and GND terminals should also be connected to the exciter terminals for antitrip control when using voice-controlled transmitters. Operation
The operation of the Drake 2-B communication receiver involves setting various controls for different modes of transmission. For AM reception, the power switch is set to “POWER,” the standby-receive switch to “RCV,” and the AVC to “S AVC.” The noise limiter is turned off unless excessive noise is present, and the detector is set to “DIODE.” The BFO is turned off. The band switch and preselector are set to the desired band, the RF gain is turned fully clockwise, and the passband selector is set to 3.6 or 2.1 if there is bad QRM. The passband tuning is adjusted to the center of the longest range, and the signal is tuned with the main dial while peaking the preselector.
For CW reception, similar initial settings are made, but the detector is set to “PROD” and the BFO is turned on. The passband selector is set to .5 KC, and the passband tuning knob is set to the small dot at either end of the shortest line. The AF gain is adjusted as required, and the passband tuning can be readjusted for minimum interference and maximum signal strength. If AVC action is not desired, the RF gain is backed off until the meter stops kicking.
For single or double sideband suppressed carrier reception, the settings are similar to CW, but the passband selector is set at 2.1 KC, and the passband tuning knob is adjusted to the dot at the end of the medium-length line corresponding to the desired sideband. The signal is carefully tuned for natural voice quality.
