Manual Overview

The B&K Precision manual provides detailed instructions for operating and troubleshooting frequency counters, specifically models 1803A and 1804. The manual outlines the frequency characteristics, input specifications, and display features for both models. Troubleshooting involves checking the power and gate time settings, ensuring the correct input jack is used, and verifying the signal frequency range. Error diagnostics include checking the overflow indicator, which lights up when the frequency exceeds 99.999999 MHz, and monitoring the low battery indication, which causes all digits to flash if the voltage drops below 7.0 V in model 1803A. Calibration involves setting the power/gate time switch to either 0.1 or 1.0 seconds, depending on the desired resolution and update time. The manual also provides board-level guidance, including input impedance and connector types. For technical issues beyond basic troubleshooting, the manual advises contacting an authorized service agency or the factory service department for repairs.

Operation

The operation of the frequency counters involves connecting the AC Adapter to an outlet and plugging it into the rear panel jack of the frequency counter. For Model 1803A, battery or external DC power can also be used. The POWER/GATE TIME switch should be set to either 0.1S or 1.0S to turn on the instrument. The 0.1S setting is for faster measurement of high-frequency signals with a display update time of 0.2 seconds and a resolution of 10 Hz for Model 1803A or the direct input of Model 1804, and 100 Hz for the prescale input of Model 1804. The 1.0S setting is for measuring low frequencies or where the highest resolution is needed, with a display update time of 2 seconds and a resolution of 1 Hz for Model 1803A or the direct input of Model 1804, and 10 Hz for the prescale input of Model 1804. The signal to be measured should be applied to the input jack, with Model 1803A accepting 5 Hz to 100 MHz signals and Model 1804 accepting 5 Hz to 100 MHz signals at the direct input jack.
