Controls & Indicators
The POWER Switch is located on the right side of the unit and is used to turn the power on and off. When the switch is in the upward position, the unit is on and the red POWER LED is illuminated. When the switch is in the downward position, the unit is off and the red POWER LED is not illuminated.
The VIDEO FORMAT Button is used to select a new video format. After pressing this button, you can choose from various formats such as 1920 x 1080 30i, 1920 x 1080 30p, and others. The same pattern previously displayed will be maintained when a new video format is selected.
The PATTERN Buttons allow selection of different patterns displayed as icons on the buttons. There are 14 patterns available, including SMPTE Bars, PLUGE, Needle, and Color Bars. Some buttons can be pressed multiple times to display variations of a pattern. The same video format previously displayed will be maintained when a new pattern is selected.
Installation / Setup
The setup of the Viodel 1253 HDTV Multi-Standard Pattern Generator involves connecting the unit using three BNC connectors labeled Y, Pb, and Pr, which correspond to the HDTV-Component video connections on a monitor or TV. Additionally, there is a DIN connector labeled S-VID for S-Video connections. The BNC connectors should be connected to cables with a characteristic impedance of 75 (or 50) ohms, and a BNC-to-RCA adaptor may be used if necessary. The Y signal is the luminance signal, while Pb and Pr are the chrominance signals. The Y signal drives a 1V peak-to-peak signal into a 75-ohm load, and the Pb and Pr signals drive 0.7V peak-to-peak signals into 75-ohm loads. The unit is back-terminated with 75-ohm impedance for each connector.
Operation
The POWER switch on the right side of the BK Precision 1253 unit turns the power on and off. Sliding the switch upward turns the unit on, indicated by the red POWER LED being on, and sliding it downward turns the unit off, with the LED off.
The VIDEO FORMAT button is used to select a new video format. After pressing this button, one can choose from various formats such as 1920 x 1080 30i (default on power-up), 1920 x 1080 30p, 1920 x 1080 24p, 1280 x 720 60p, 1280 x 720 30p, 1280 x 720 24p, 704 x 480 60p, 704 x 480 30p, 704 x 480 30i, NTSC, PAL, and SECAM. The previously displayed pattern is maintained when a new video format is selected.
The PATTERN buttons allow selection of different patterns displayed as icons on the buttons. Patterns include SMPTE Bars 75% (default on power-up), PLUGE, Needle, Color Bars 75%, Cross Hatch [16:9], DVD Aspect Ratio [1.33, 1.78, 1.85, 2.35], Raster [75%: White, Yellow, Cyan, Green, Magenta, Red, Blue, Black], Multiburst, Focus, Staircase, ANSI Gray, Window [2.5 IRE steps from Black to White], Checker, and Overscan – Bounce. The previously displayed video format is maintained when a new pattern is selected.
Pressing the DVD Aspect Ratio button multiple times cycles through popular DVD aspect ratios. Pressing the Raster button multiple times cycles through full-screen outputs of eight colors at 75% amplitude. Pressing or holding the Window button cycles the window luminance through all grays from black to white in steps of 2.5 IRE units.
