Manual Overview

The Bk Precision manual for models 467 and 490 outlines a systematic approach for testing and restoring CRTs. The process begins with a setup phase where all controls are set counterclockwise, and the G2 switch is set to NORM. The appropriate adapter and heater voltage are selected from the setup chart. The FUNCTION switch is rotated to SET-UP, and the SET HTR is adjusted to the specified HTR VOLTS. Leakage is checked, and if excessive, corrective actions are taken. The next step involves setting the cutoff by adjusting the G2 controls to add one division to the meter reading. Testing involves checking emission, tracking, life, and focus. If issues are detected, the manual provides restoration procedures such as removing shorts, cleaning and balancing, and rejuvenating. Each restoration step involves specific actions, such as pressing the REMOVE SHORTS button or using the CLEAN/BALANCE and REJUVENATE functions, with detailed instructions on how to proceed based on the meter readings and lamp indicators. The manual emphasizes repeating tests and restoration steps as necessary to achieve optimal CRT performance.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Diagnose G1-K leakage using leakage lamps and isolation transformer.
  • Adjust G2 controls for proper meter readings during cutoff test.
  • Use CLEANeBALANCE for emission issues not resolved by initial tests.

Installation / Setup

Set all controls fully counterclockwise and set the G2 switch to NORM. Use the SET-UP chart to find the proper adapter and heater voltage, then select the HTR RANGE. Plug in the tube and power cord. Turn the FUNCTION switch to SET-UP and adjust the SET HTR to the specified HTR VOLTS. Set G1 to 50 volts unless noted otherwise in the SET-UP CHART. Check LEAKAGE lamps; if they glow, it indicates excessive leakage. H-K leakage cannot be repaired, so use an isolation transformer. For G1-K leakage, proceed to the RESTORE step.

Operation

To operate the CRT tester for models 467 and 490, follow these steps:

1. Set-Up:
– Turn all controls fully counterclockwise and set the G2 switch to NORM.
– Use the SET-UP chart to find the appropriate adapter and heater voltage.
– Select the HTR RANGE and plug in the tube and power cord.
– Set the FUNCTION switch to SET-UP and adjust the SET HTR to the specified HTR VOLTS.
– Set G1 to 50 volts unless otherwise noted in the SET-UP CHART.
– Check the LEAKAGE lamps; if they glow, it indicates excessive leakage. Use an isolation transformer for H-K leakage. For G1-K leakage, proceed to RESTORE-(A).

2. Set Cutoff:
– Rotate the FUNCTION switch to the SET CUTOFF position.
– Adjust each G2 control to add one division to the corresponding meter reading.
– Use the Red G2 control for black and white tubes. If the maximum G2 does not raise the pointer, place the G2 switch in the HIGH position.

3. Test:
– Rotate the FUNCTION switch to the TEST position.
– Emission: If all guns read in the good region, emissions are OK. If any gun reads BAD, proceed to RESTORE-(C).
– Tracking: Hold the TRACKING button and adjust the TRACKING control to set the highest gun at the SET TRACKING mark. Tracking is OK if the other two guns read in the yellow area. Release the button to return to the emission test. If tracking is bad, proceed to RESTORE-(B).
– Life: Observe emission levels and hold the LIFE button until readings stabilize. The less the emission drops, the longer the life expectancy. If any gun indicates BAD during the LIFE test, proceed to RESTORE-(B).
– Focus: Push the FOCUS test button. The FOCUS OK lamp will glow if the connection is good. An open focus connection cannot be repaired.

4. Restoring the Picture Tube:
– Remove Shorts: If G1-K leakage is indicated but the G1-K SHORT lamp does not light, follow STEP B-CLEANeBALANCE. If the G1-K Short lamp lights, press and release the REMOVE SHORTS button. Repeat STEP 2 and STEP 3 after shorts are removed.
– Clean and Balance: Select the gun to be cleaned based on specific conditions. Set the FUNCTION switch to RESTORE and the REJUVENATE/CLEANeBALANCE switch to CLEANeBALANCE. Push the RESTORE button for the selected gun and release when the pointer falls to 0.2. Return to TEST and repeat STEP 2 and STEP 3 if needed.
– Rejuvenate: Select the gun to be restored if emission is in the BAD region or tracking cannot be corrected. Set the FUNCTION switch to REJUVENATE and the REJUVENATE/CLEANeBALANCE switch to REJUVENATE. Push the RESTORE button for the lowest emission gun and release when the pointer reaches 0.5. Return to TEST and repeat STEP 2 and STEP 3 if needed. Use CLEANeBALANCE for further improvement if necessary.

Troubleshooting & Error Codes

The manual provides a troubleshooting procedure for models 467 and 490, focusing on testing and restoring CRTs. It includes steps for setup, cutoff adjustment, and testing for emission, tracking, life, and focus. If issues are detected, such as excessive leakage or poor emission, the manual outlines restoration steps: removing shorts, cleaning and balancing, and rejuvenating the picture tube. Specific instructions are given for each restoration step, including the use of various switches and buttons to address issues like G1-K leakage and emission problems.

Safety & Warnings

Do not apply power to the CRT chassis at any time during the test of any CRT. Completely discharge High Voltage Anode supply of CRT before connecting it to the CRT tester.
