Safety & Warnings

This unit has been designed and tested in accordance with the EC Certificate of Conformity and has left the manufacturer’s plant in a condition fully complying with safety standards. To maintain this condition and to ensure safe operation, the user must observe all instructions and warnings given in this operating manual.

Safety-related symbols used on equipment and documentation from R&S include: Observe operating instructions, Weight indication for units >18 kg, PE terminal Ground, Danger! Shock hazard, Warning! Hot surfaces, Attention! Electrostatic sensitive devices require special care.

The unit may be used only in the operating conditions and positions specified by the manufacturer. It is not permissible to interrupt the PE conductor intentionally, neither in the incoming cable nor on the unit itself as this may cause the unit to become electrically hazardous. Any extension lines or multiple socket outlets used must be checked for compliance with relevant safety standards at regular intervals.

The unit may be operated only from supply networks fused with max. 16 A. Unless specified otherwise in the data sheet, a tolerance of +10% shall apply to the nominal voltage and of +5% to the nominal frequency. For measurements in circuits with voltages Vims > 30V, suitable measures should be taken to avoid any hazards.

If units without power switches are integrated in racks or systems, a disconnecting device must be provided at system level. Applicable local or national safety regulations and rules for the prevention of accidents must be observed in all work performed. Prior to performing any work on the unit or opening the unit, the latter must be disconnected from the supply network.

Any adjustments, replacements of parts, maintenance or repair may be carried out only by authorized R&S technical personnel. Only original parts may be used for replacing parts relevant to safety (e.g., power switches, power transformers, fuses). A safety test must be performed after each replacement of parts relevant to safety.

Ensure that the connections with information technology equipment comply with IEC950 / EN60950. Lithium batteries must not be exposed to high temperatures or fire. Keep batteries away from children. If the battery is replaced improperly, there is danger of explosion. Only replace the battery by R&S type (see spare part list). Lithium batteries are suitable for environmentally-friendly disposal or specialized recycling. Dispose them into appropriate containers, only. Do not short-circuit the battery.

Electrostatics via the connectors may damage the equipment. For the safe handling and operation of the equipment, appropriate measures against electrostatics should be implemented. The outside of the instrument is suitably cleaned using a soft, lint-free dustcloth. Never use solvents such as thinners, acetone and similar things, as they may damage the front panel labeling or plastic parts. Any additional safety instructions given in this manual are also to be observed.

Rohde-Schwarz FSP3/FSP7/FSP13/FSP30/FSP40 Operation Manual Overview

The Rohde-Schwarz FSP series (FSP3, FSP7, FSP13, FSP30, FSP40) are versatile spectrum analyzers designed for high-precision signal analysis in various RF and microwave applications. These instruments provide accurate frequency domain measurements, making them ideal for research, development, production testing, and troubleshooting of wireless communication systems, radar, and other electronic devices.

Main Features and Specifications

  • Frequency range coverage from 2 Hz up to 40 GHz depending on the model
  • High dynamic range and low phase noise for precise signal analysis
  • Intuitive user interface with a large color display and touchscreen support
  • Advanced measurement functions including modulation analysis, channel power, and occupied bandwidth
  • Multiple connectivity options: USB, LAN, GPIB for remote control and data transfer
  • Compact and robust design suitable for both laboratory and field use

Basic Usage and Operation Tips

To begin using the FSP series spectrum analyzers, power on the device and allow the system to complete its self-test. Connect the input signal to the RF input port and select the desired frequency range and measurement mode. Utilize the touchscreen or rotary knobs to adjust settings such as resolution bandwidth, span, and reference level. Save frequently used configurations to internal memory for quick recall. For accurate measurements, always perform a calibration routine before critical testing.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Notes

If the analyzer fails to power on, verify the power cable connection and check the fuse. In case of unexpected measurement errors, ensure that the input signal levels are within the specified limits to avoid damage. Regularly clean the RF connectors and keep the device free from dust. Perform firmware updates as recommended by Rohde-Schwarz to maintain optimal performance. For persistent issues, consult the detailed troubleshooting section in the manual or contact authorized service centers.

Safety Reminder

Always follow standard electrical safety practices when operating the spectrum analyzer. Avoid exposure to high RF power levels that exceed the device’s maximum input specifications. Use appropriate grounding and ensure the equipment is operated in a dry, well-ventilated environment. Disconnect the instrument from power sources before cleaning or performing maintenance tasks to prevent electric shock.
