Manual Overview
The Kenwood TKM-707 instruction manual provides detailed guidance on the installation, operation, and maintenance of the SSB radiotelephone. For troubleshooting, the manual emphasizes ensuring proper installation and connection, particularly focusing on the antenna system. It advises using a 50-ohm coaxial cable, such as RG-8U, to maintain an SWR of less than 1.5, which is crucial for optimal performance and to prevent activation of the protection circuit. The manual includes a section on error diagnostics, highlighting the importance of checking connections and ensuring the power supply is within the specified 13.6 VDC ±15% range. Calibration and adjustments are covered under maintenance, with instructions on aligning the grooves in the mounting bracket for stable installation. Board-level guidance is limited, but the manual provides a schematic diagram for more technical troubleshooting. It also includes a list of accessories and their installation, such as the microphone and mounting bracket, to ensure proper setup and operation.
Quick Issues Covered
- Diagnose power-up failures with 13.6 VDC requirement checks.
- Adjust frequency stability after 10 minutes warm-up.

Installation / Setup
The installation of the SSB radiotelephone involves selecting a location for the mounting bracket that ensures ease of operation and safety. The bracket should be installed using the supplied flat washers and self-tapping screws or spring washers and bolts. A rubber cushion can be attached to the bracket. The grooves in the bracket should align with the rear shoulder bolts, allowing the radiotelephone to slide into place. The bracket’s angle can be adjusted to one of three viewing angles. The radiotelephone should be held in place while the shoulder bolt is tightened with a knob.
For connections, the radiotelephone requires a maximum of 30 A at 13.6 VDC ±15% when transmitting at full power. The length of the supplied power cable should not be exceeded. The antenna connector of the radiotelephone should be connected to the RF IN jack using a coaxial cable like RG-8U. The antenna input impedance is 50 ohms, and a properly adjusted antenna of good quality is recommended for optimal performance. If the antenna is far from the radiotelephone, low loss coaxial cable such as RG-8U is advised. The impedance of the coaxial cable and the antenna should match to ensure the SWR is less than 1.5.

Safety & Warnings
Long transmission or extended operation in the HI power mode might cause the rear of the SSB radiotelephone to get warm. Do not place the SSB radiotelephone where the heat sink (rear panel) might come in contact with plastic or vinyl surfaces. To prevent electric shock, fire, and other injury, do not open the unit under any circumstances. Turn the power off before cleaning the unit and do not use abrasive pads, thinner, benzine, or substances that may damage the unit. Wipe the front panel and exterior surfaces with a soft dry cloth or a cloth lightly moistened with water. Do not place the unit where it will be exposed to direct sunlight or close to heating appliances. Ensure good ventilation by not placing anything on top of the cabinet and allowing at least 15 cm (6 inches) of space behind the unit. The power requirement is 13.6 VDC; never attempt connection to a 24 VDC source. Do not place the unit in areas of excessive dust, high humidity, or on unstable surfaces.
